Drain Cleaning Service That Gets to the Root

A clogged drain is one of the most common calls we get, and it's almost never just the drain. Most clogs are a symptom. Grease builds up in kitchen lines for months before the sink stops draining. Tree roots work into a main sewer line over years before you notice a backup. If you're dealing with a slow drain, gurgling pipes, or standing water that won't clear, call Thomas Plumbing & Construction and we'll find out what's actually going on, not just punch a hole through it and send you a bill.

Drain cleaning service cost depends on where the blockage is, how severe it is, and what method clears it. A simple snake on a single fixture runs far less than a hydro-jetting treatment on a grease-packed main line. Older homes throughout Alamance and Chatham County often have clay or cast-iron drains that collect roots and scale in ways newer PVC lines don't. If there's a camera inspection involved, that factors in too. Every job is different -- contact Thomas Plumbing & Construction for an accurate estimate.

What We Actually Do When We Clean a Drain

Diagnosis first. The fix follows from what we find.

We don't show up with a snake and assume that's the answer. First, we figure out which drain is causing the problem, whether it's isolated to one fixture or affecting multiple lines. That tells us a lot before we touch anything. A single slow bathroom sink is a different job than a main line that's backing up into the lowest fixture in the house. From there, we match the method to the problem: a hand snake for a straightforward clog, a drain machine for tougher blockages in longer runs, or hydro-jetting for grease accumulation in kitchen lines that keeps coming back. We also work alongside our plumbing leak repair and pipe repair capabilities, so if the camera shows something worse than a clog, you won't need a second contractor to deal with it.

Common Problems

Drain Problems We Clear Every Week

01

Kitchen Grease Buildup

Grease doesn't clear on its own, and hot water only moves it further down the line before it rehardens. Kitchen drain lines in homes built before the 1990s are especially prone to severe accumulation. Hydro-jetting cuts through where a snake just punches a hole.

02

Bathroom Hair and Soap Clogs

The most common single-fixture call we get. Hair binds with soap residue and builds up at the p-trap or just past the stopper. Usually a straightforward clean, but we check the vent stack too if the drain gurgles after clearing.

03

Main Sewer Line Blockages

If multiple drains in the house are slow or backing up at the same time, the problem is likely in the main line. Root intrusion is a frequent culprit in rural NC properties with older clay or cast-iron sewer lines.

04

Shower and Tub Drains

Shower drain clogs can also signal a venting issue or a shower repair need if the drain itself is damaged or improperly pitched. We look at both before assuming it's just a clog.

05

Garbage Disposal Drain Lines

Disposals don't eliminate food -- they grind it into fine particles that still travel through your drain line. A clogged disposal drain line is common and often connected to larger kitchen line buildup. If the disposal itself is failing, we handle garbage disposal repair too.

DIY vs Pro

Baking Soda and Vinegar Won't Fix This

Honestly, the baking soda and vinegar method is mostly theater. It creates a fizzing reaction that feels satisfying, but it doesn't generate anywhere near enough force to break up a real clog -- and it does nothing for grease, roots, or a collapsed pipe. Drain store chemicals are a little more effective on hair clogs, but they're also corrosive. Use them repeatedly on older pipes and you can soften PVC joints or accelerate corrosion on metal lines. We've seen it. For a minor slow drain you just noticed, a plunger is still the right first move. For anything that doesn't clear with a plunger in five minutes, or anything that keeps coming back, you need a drain machine or hydro-jet, not a chemistry experiment from a YouTube video.

Our Process

How a Drain Service Call Works

  1. 01

    Diagnose Before We Touch It

We identify which drain or line is causing the problem and how far the blockage goes. That determines the right method -- no guessing.

  2. 02

    Clear the Blockage Completely

We use the appropriate tool for the job: hand snake, drain machine, or hydro-jet. We don't stop at partially clear -- we run the line until flow is full.

  3. 03

    Check the Root Cause

We don't leave without understanding why it blocked. If it's something that'll be back in six months, we tell you what to do about it before we go.

Frequently asked questions

How much does drain cleaning service cost?
Cost depends on the location of the blockage and the method needed to clear it. A straightforward snake on a single bathroom fixture is far less than hydro-jetting a grease-packed kitchen main line. Camera inspection, if needed, adds to the job. Pipe material and access also affect the price -- older cast-iron lines in Alamance County homes can take more time than PVC. Every job is different -- contact Thomas Plumbing & Construction for an accurate estimate.
Does baking soda and vinegar actually unclog a drain?
Not for anything beyond a very minor slow drain. The fizzing reaction produces carbon dioxide, which isn't forceful enough to break up a grease clog, hair mass, or root intrusion. It's not harmful to try once, but if your drain is still slow afterward, the blockage is physical, not chemical. A drain machine or hydro-jet is the only thing that reliably clears it.
Why does my drain keep clogging in the same spot?
Recurring clogs in the same drain usually mean the obstruction was never fully cleared, or there's an underlying issue driving the buildup. Partial clogs are common when a snake pokes through the center of a grease mass without removing it. Root intrusion in older sewer lines is another cause -- roots grow back. A camera inspection shows which situation you're dealing with.
What's the difference between snaking a drain and hydro-jetting?
A snake, or drain auger, uses a rotating cable to break up or pull out a blockage. It works well on hair clogs and solid obstructions. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the interior walls of the pipe, cutting through grease and flushing the debris completely. Hydro-jetting is more thorough for kitchen lines with grease buildup and main lines with scale, but it's not always necessary for a straightforward clog.
Can a clogged drain damage my pipes if I ignore it?
Yes, and the damage path depends on the type of clog. A grease clog left long enough can cause pressure to build in the line, stressing joints and seals. A main sewer line backup that goes unaddressed can push sewage back up into the lowest fixtures in the house. Root intrusion that isn't cleared keeps growing, eventually cracking older clay or cast-iron pipe from the inside. Slow drains are a warning -- they don't fix themselves.
Is gurgling from my drain a sign of something serious?
Gurgling after water drains usually signals a partial clog or a venting problem. The drain is pulling air from somewhere it shouldn't because the flow is restricted. If it's just one fixture, you likely have a localized blockage. If multiple drains gurgle or you hear it from one drain when another runs, the main line or vent stack is involved. Both need a plumber, not a plunger.
