Faucet Installation That Actually Holds Up

Most homeowners asking whether they need a plumber for faucet installation already know the answer. A loose connection under the sink, a cartridge seated wrong, a supply line torqued too hard against a plastic fitting, and you've got a drip that ruins cabinets or a full leak that soaks the subfloor. Thomas Plumbing & Construction handles faucet installation for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and outdoor spigots throughout Alamance, Chatham, and Orange County. Call us before a small job turns into a big one.

What drives faucet installation costs up or down comes down to a few things: the type of faucet, where it's going, and what's already there. Swapping a single-hole kitchen faucet in a newer home is straightforward. Retrofitting a widespread three-hole bathroom faucet in an older home with corroded supply lines and a stuck shutoff valve is a different job entirely. Access matters, too. An outdoor faucet installation or a wall-mount faucet involves more rough-in work than a standard deck-mount swap. Every job is different, and if you've got aging pipes underneath, we may flag a plumbing pipe repair issue while we're in there. Contact Thomas Plumbing & Construction for an accurate estimate.

What Separates a Correct Install From One That Fails

The details most people skip are the ones that cause problems two years later.

01

Supply Line Connections

Braided stainless lines get hand-tightened first, then a quarter-turn with a wrench. Over-tighten and the compression fitting cracks. Under-tighten and it weeps. Neither shows up until you're looking at water damage.

02

Shutoff Valve Condition

An old angle stop that hasn't moved in fifteen years may not actually shut off fully. We check it before we pull the old faucet. If it's stuck or leaking, we tell you. You don't want to find out during the swap.

03

Cartridge and Seat Alignment

A cartridge seated even slightly off-axis will drip from day one or wear unevenly and drip within a year. This is the most common failure on DIY installs. Correct alignment takes an extra two minutes. We don't skip it.

04

Deck Plate and Gasket Seating

Deck plates that aren't sealed properly let water sit under the faucet body and slowly rot the sink deck. Silicone or a proper rubber gasket, seated flat, keeps that from happening.

05

Pressure and Flow Check

After every install we run both handles, check under the cabinet, and verify flow rate and temperature response. A faucet that passes a visual check but has a partially closed supply line isn't done.

Types We Install

Every Common Faucet Type, Handled

  1. 01

    Kitchen Faucets

Single-hole, three-hole, pull-down spray, commercial-style high-arc. We handle all of them, including faucets with integrated soap dispensers or side sprayers.

  2. 02

    Bathroom Faucets

Single-handle, widespread, centerset, and wall-mount. Older homes in this region often have non-standard hole spacing, which we check before any parts are ordered.

  3. 03

    Outdoor Faucets (Hose Bibbs)

Standard hose bibbs and frost-free sillcocks for properties in areas with hard winters. Outdoor faucet installation involves wall penetration and proper sealing, not just a swap at the fixture.

  4. 04

    Bathtub and Shower Faucets

Tub spouts, shower valves, and combination units. These overlap with shower repair work when the existing valve body has failed or the cartridge is the problem, not just the trim.

How We Work

How Faucet Installation Goes at Thomas Plumbing

Three steps, no surprises.

  1. 01

    Look Before We Touch Anything

We check the shutoff valves, existing supply lines, and the condition of the deck or wall before we start. If something needs to be addressed first, we say so upfront.

  2. 02

Remove the Old, Install the New

Old faucet comes out, the mounting surface gets cleaned, and the new fixture goes in with correct torque on every connection. No shortcuts on the gasket or supply line fittings.

  3. 03

Test and Verify Before We Leave

Both handles, full pressure, hot and cold. We check underneath with a light, check the drain if it was disturbed, and make sure there's zero moisture before we call it done.

When a Faucet Job Turns Into Something Bigger

Honest answer: sometimes it does. Older homes, especially those with galvanized or copper supply lines that haven't been touched in decades, can surprise you when you open up the cabinet. A shutoff valve that won't fully close, a corroded nipple that cracks when you unthread the old faucet, a slow drip behind the wall that nobody noticed, these things show up. We won't pad the job, but we won't pretend we didn't see something either. If we spot something during an install that points to a plumbing leak or a line that's on its way out, we tell you what it is and let you decide. We serve Graham, Liberty, Siler City, Pittsboro, Haw River, and the surrounding area. If you're nearby and need a faucet handled right, call us.

Quick Facts About Faucet Installation

Structured for homeowners who want a direct answer before they call.

  • A plumber catches what a handyman misses

Shutoff valve condition, supply line age, and proper cartridge seating are trade knowledge, not general repair skills.

  • Most installs take one to two hours

Straightforward swaps on accessible fixtures. Older homes with corroded connections take longer.

  • Outdoor faucet jobs require more than a fixture swap

Wall penetration, backer board sealing, and frost-free selection based on local winter temps all matter.

  • A dripping faucet after install usually means a cartridge or seat issue

Not a brand defect. Correct seating during installation prevents this entirely.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost for faucet installation?
Faucet installation cost varies based on faucet type, location in the home, and the condition of what's already there. A straightforward kitchen or bathroom faucet swap in a newer home runs differently than an outdoor sillcock installation or a widespread bathroom faucet in a home with old, corroded shutoffs. The fixture itself is often the biggest cost variable. Every job is different, so contact Thomas Plumbing & Construction for an accurate estimate on your specific situation.
Do I need a licensed plumber to install a faucet, or can a handyman do it?
A handyman can swap a simple faucet in a newer home with easy access and good shutoff valves. Where it goes wrong is when they miss a corroded supply line, overtighten a plastic fitting, or seat the cartridge slightly off. Those mistakes show up as leaks days or months later. A plumber also checks the shutoff valves and supply lines before starting, which catches problems that turn a two-hour job into water damage.
What's the difference between a frost-free sillcock and a standard outdoor faucet?
A frost-free sillcock has a long stem that puts the actual shutoff point 6 to 12 inches inside the wall, past the insulation line, so the water in the pipe drains back after you turn it off. A standard hose bibb leaves water sitting at the exterior wall, where it can freeze and crack the pipe during hard winters. For most NC properties, frost-free is the right call for outdoor faucet installation.
Why is my new faucet still dripping after it was just installed?
Almost always a cartridge seating issue. The cartridge controls flow and temperature mixing, and if it's not fully seated and aligned, it won't create a proper seal even when the handle is off. This is the most common result of a rushed install. The fix is pulling the cartridge back out and reseating it correctly. It's a quick repair, but it shouldn't have been necessary in the first place.
Can you replace a single-hole faucet with a three-hole widespread faucet on the same sink?
It depends on the sink. Some kitchen and bathroom sinks have pre-drilled openings that can accommodate a different configuration, others don't. If you're going from single-hole to widespread on a sink that only has one opening, the sink deck would need to be drilled, which changes the scope of the job. We look at what's there first before telling you what's possible. Don't buy a widespread faucet before confirming your sink can take it.
How do I know when a faucet should be replaced versus repaired?
If the valve body or cartridge seat is damaged, replacement is usually cheaper long-term than chasing a repair. If it's just a worn cartridge, O-ring, or aerator, a repair makes sense, especially on a quality faucet. Budget faucets from big-box stores often aren't worth repairing because parts aren't stocked and the valve body wears fast. We'll tell you straight: if replacement makes more sense, we'll say so and not sell you a repair that won't hold.
