Calcium Buildup and Shower Repairs We Handle

Calcium buildup in a shower is one of those problems most people underestimate. You notice the showerhead getting weaker, maybe a handle that's stiffer than it used to be, and you assume it's just mineral scale on the surface. Sometimes it is. But calcium deposits can work their way into the valve cartridge, the diverter, and the supply ports inside the wall, and once they're in there, no amount of vinegar is going to clear it out. If your water pressure has dropped or your shower's running lukewarm when it used to run hot, that's the job Thomas Plumbing & Construction handles from start to finish. Call us before a stiff handle turns into a valve that won't shut off at all.

Shower repairs cover a wide range depending on what's actually wrong. Replacing a showerhead or a worn cartridge is a straightforward call. Getting into the valve body, reseating a drain, or dealing with a leak that's been running inside the wall is a different scope entirely. What drives cost up isn't the labor on the obvious fix. It's the access, the age of the plumbing, and what we find once we open things up. Older homes in this part of central North Carolina often have galvanized or polybutylene supply lines that complicate a simple repair. We'll tell you what we're dealing with before we go further. Every job is different, contact Thomas Plumbing & Construction for an accurate estimate.

What Shower Problems Actually Look Like

Most shower issues start small and get expensive when they're ignored.

01

Calcified Showerhead or Valve

Mineral deposits narrow the spray ports and clog valve cartridges over time. If pressure is down or temperature won't hold, calcium is usually the first suspect.

02

Only Hot Water or Only Cold

A cartridge that's stuck or worn through can lock you into one temperature. It's a cheap part but it requires shutting off supply and disassembling the valve body. Not a DIY call if you haven't done it.

03

Slow or Backed-Up Drain

Hair, soap scum, and mineral scale compound in shower drains faster than any other drain in the house. A slow shower drain that doesn't clear with a snake usually has a partial blockage further down the line.

04

Leak Behind the Wall

A plumbing leak you can't see is the expensive kind. If the ceiling below your bathroom shows a damp spot or the grout around your shower pan is cracking, water is getting somewhere it shouldn't.

05

Handle That's Hard to Turn

Stiff handles are almost always a cartridge or a stem issue.

06

Low Water Pressure Throughout

If pressure is low at the shower but fine elsewhere in the house, the showerhead or the valve restrictor is usually the culprit. If it's low everywhere, that's a supply-line conversation.

How We Work

Our Shower Repair Process

We don't guess. We find the problem, tell you what it'll take, and then we fix it.

  1. 01

    Diagnose First

We run the shower, check pressure, feel the valve, pull the showerhead, and listen. A visual tells us a lot before we ever open a wall.

  2. 02

    Explain What We Found

You'll know what's wrong, what caused it, and what fixing it involves before we start any work. No surprises once the bill comes.

  3. 03

    Repair and Test

We make the fix with quality parts, restore any access we had to open, and run the shower until we're confident the problem is gone, not just reduced.

Repair vs. Replace: Honest Advice

Here's the straightforward answer on whether to fix or replace: it depends on the age of the valve and how deep the damage goes. A cartridge swap on a 10-year-old valve makes sense. Putting a new cartridge in a 25-year-old valve body that's corroded internally doesn't. You'll be back in a year with the same problem. We'll tell you which situation you're in. We're not going to push a full replacement when a repair is the right call, and we're not going to sell you a patch that fails in two years either. If the valve body itself is compromised, the correct fix is replacing the valve. If it's just the cartridge or the showerhead, that's all we'll touch. Some of our work in this area connects to related repairs. If the faucet installation in an adjacent bathroom is also aging out, it makes sense to address both in one visit rather than two service calls.

Our Process

Signs You Shouldn't Wait on This

Some shower problems are inconvenient. These three mean water is actively going somewhere it shouldn't.

  1. 01

Damp Drywall or Ceiling Stains Below

This is a leak inside the wall or floor. Every day it runs, the damage gets wider. Mold follows water damage fast in humid NC summers.

  2. 02

Grout or Caulk Separating at the Pan

When the seal around your shower pan breaks, water migrates into the subfloor. Subfloor rot is a major repair, far more than fixing the caulk line would have been.

  3. 03

Valve That Won't Fully Shut Off

A constantly running shower is wasting water and will eventually fail completely. Cartridges don't fix themselves, they deteriorate. A plumbing leak repair call now costs a fraction of what water damage costs later.

Frequently asked questions

Can calcium buildup in a shower actually damage the valve, or just the showerhead?
Both, but the valve is the more serious concern. Mineral deposits that build up on the exterior of a showerhead are a surface problem, soak it or replace it. Calcium that works into a cartridge valve binds the ceramic disc or the rubber O-rings and scores the valve seat over time. Once the seat is damaged, you're not replacing just the cartridge anymore. Catching it early makes a big difference in what the fix costs.
Why is my shower producing only hot water with no cold mixed in?
In most cases this is a cartridge failure. The cartridge inside a single-handle valve controls the mix of hot and cold by rotating against ceramic or rubber seats. When a cartridge wears out or gets stuck, it can lock in one temperature position. Calcium deposits are a frequent cause of cartridge failure on this side of NC where water hardness runs moderate to high. Replacing the cartridge fixes it in most cases, but we check the valve body for damage at the same time.
Is it cheaper to repair a shower or just replace the whole thing?
Repairs are almost always cheaper unless the shower pan itself is cracked or the valve body is corroded beyond serviceable condition. Replacing a cartridge, a showerhead, or reseating a drain is a fraction of the cost of full removal and reinstall. We'll give you a straight answer on which situation you're actually in. If a repair won't hold for more than a year or two, we'll tell you that upfront rather than take your money on a short-term fix.
Can a handyman fix a shower, or does this need a licensed plumber?
Surface-level work like a showerhead swap or recaulking a pan is something a capable handyman can handle. Anything involving the valve body, supply lines inside the wall, or a drain that connects to the drain stack is plumbing work. Getting into the valve and reconnecting supply incorrectly can create a slow leak inside the wall that you won't see until you've got rot or mold. For anything beyond cosmetic, call a plumber.
How do I know if my shower is leaking inside the wall versus just around the drain?
Check two things: the grout and caulk lines around the shower pan and the ceiling directly below if there's a floor below the bathroom. A drain leak usually shows up as efflorescence or soft grout at the base of the walls. A supply-line or valve leak inside the wall shows up as damp drywall, a stain on the ceiling below, or a musty smell that doesn't go away. If you're not sure, we can do a leak detection check before the problem gets bigger.
How long does a shower valve cartridge typically last before it needs replacing?
Most quality cartridges last 10 to 20 years depending on water quality and how often the shower runs. Homes with harder water see shorter cartridge life because the mineral deposits degrade the rubber components faster. If your shower handle has gotten noticeably harder to turn over the past year or two, that's usually the cartridge beginning to fail. Don't wait until it seizes completely. A stuck cartridge can shear the retaining clip and turn a routine swap into a much bigger job.
